GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies introduces the New DPI620 Series – A unique Hart Communicator and a Multifunctional Calibrator in one device!

Discover a big HART in a small package, for a small price with the hand-held DPI 620 Series. This advanced multifunction calibrator and HART communicator incorporates full HART capability, making it the only combined Hart communicator and calibrator currently on the market.

The rugged and compact instrument, which is weather-proofed to IP 65, incorporates the latest application software and contains a complete library of registered HART device descriptions. Up-grades can be simply downloaded, free-of-charge, from the GE website.  Offering so many functions and features within one portable instrument, the DPI 620 will find application in oil and gas, power generation, utilities and throughout the process industries, in the laboratory and workshop as well as on-plant.

Unlike competitive HART communicators which can only be used for configuration, commissioning and maintenance, the new DPI 620 is also recognized as one of the most accurate and versatile calibration systems available. Consequently, plant engineers and technicians can now considerably reduce the inventory of equipment they have to carry to perform maintenance and calibration tasks, as for the first time they can use a communicator which is also a calibrator and PDA.

Lighter and smaller than competitive communicators, the new communicator/calibrator, with its full colour, high resolution touch interface, has a large internal memory, allowing it to store additional features such as procedure and datalog files. These can be transferred using USB, WiFi, memory stick or the instrument’s  memory card, which can be up to 4GB, with its integral card reader.  Features which are new to HART communicators generally include an integral 24V loop power supply to energise HART devices and loops and a menu-selectable 250 Ohm loop resistor, rather than a separate physical resistor, for use when a device is not connected or the loop is switched off.

The incorporation of a calibrator within the communicator means that there is no need to carry ancillary equipment such as multi-meters to measure mA when trimming sensors and there is naturally no need for secondary calibration equipment during sensor trim and device calibration, as the DPI 620 simultaneously sources and measures the primary variable, whether this be mA, pressure, V, mV ohms, frequency or temperature from RTDs or thermocouples.

The DPI 620 also has the capability to automate calibration procedures and document “As Found” and “As Left” results and can analyse device trends to support preventative maintenance programmes. It is available in a Windows CE version with standard Windows applications and file management and the computing power to view pdf files and jpeg images such as loop diagrams, data sheets, safety procedures, spreadsheets and to create text documents.

Naturally, the new  communicator retains the world-class pressure generation and measurement capability of the existing DPI 620 calibrator. This means on-board pressure generation from vacuum to 100 bar pneumatic or 0 to 1000 bar hydraulic, at an accuracy of 0.005% FS.

Emerson’s DeltaV S-Series Platform with “I/O On Demand” Eliminates Work, Reduces Project Cost, and Increases Operational Flexibility

Emerson Process Management announces the new S-series platform featuring “I/O on demand” and Electronic Marshalling.  Resulting from an intense focus on Human Centered Design, the S-series headlines the company’s wide ranging innovative technologies in the v11 release of the DeltaV digital automation system.  The new DeltaV S-series platform sets the industry standard for usability and flexibility.

The new DeltaV release includes major enhancements to all of the systems’ I/O processing, operator displays, asset management, batch capability and system security.  These combined capabilities reduce customer project complexity, eliminate needless work, and speed system commissioning.  They lift Emerson’s PlantWeb digital architecture to new levels of project and operations performance.

Unique project and operations advantages stem from the S-series I/O on demand flexibility which allows users to choose among traditional wired, wireless, bussed and Electronic Marshalling.

With I/O on demand, users decide what type of I/O they want - Wireless, FF, HART, AI, AO, DI, DO, DP, T/C, or RTD.  They decide when they want the I/O, whether for late project changes, during start-up, during operation, or temporary installations; and where they want the I/O, whether in a rack room, remote locations, hazardous areas, safety systems, or harsh environments.  The DeltaV S-series enables this freedom of I/O choice and ease of implementation.

Further advantages are realized with Electronic Marshalling, a powerful new technology that streamlines design and installation for users.  This unique marshalling approach eliminates two-thirds of the wiring and connections needed by today’s conventional marshalling cabinets.  A striking new technology invented with the S-series -- new single channel CHARacterization ModuleS (CHARMS) -- make this possible.  CHARMS relay I/O information to any DeltaV controller via Ethernet backbone.  This unique electronic communications method eliminates the need for users to wire I/O to specific controller I/O cards.  This change can dramatically impact the users’ experience since it provides single channel integrity and flexibility down to the channel (not I/O card) level.  These benefits improve plant uptime, and make projects simpler and easier to engineer and implement.

Beyond making the normal project tasks easier, another significant benefit from Electronic Marshalling is dealing with change.  Whereas traditional project engineering requires major time and cost in changing rack-room I/O wiring and terminations as process design is refined during project execution and construction, the DeltaV S-series hardware with Electronic Marshalling makes changes easy and eliminates re-wiring.  Simply land the field wires, pop in the CHARM and electronically marshal it wherever needed. By adapting to change easily, Electronic Marshalling allows process manufacturers to shorten project schedules, accommodate late project changes, and dramatically simplify the I/O and marshalling design process. This late binding of process changes provides unparalleled adaptability and can help avoid costly, last minute change orders.

The DeltaV S-series makes a major enhancement for WirelessHART networks as well.  In addition to the existing native wireless integration, the new DeltaV S-series now has fully redundant communications, which together with the mesh wireless networks, provide the highest uptime possible.  With these capabilities, users can apply wireless technology to more monitoring and control applications than ever before

Emerson's Full Redundancy for Smart Wireless Monitoring and Control Applications Advances Wireless Adoption on All Capital Projects

Emerson has announced a unique approach to redundancy for Smart Wireless monitoring and control solutions.  Available with the DeltaV S-series digital automation system, full redundancy protects the wireless network from any single point of failure by allowing primary failover to ensure that data is always delivered even if there is a malfunction.

The enhancements include redundant Wireless I/O, power and communications and a redundant Smart Wireless Remote Link.  The Remote Link can be mounted in class 1/Div 1/zone 0; it easily links the wireless field network into a DeltaV system which makes an optimized PID available for wireless control.  The new full redundancy furthers the strength of Smart Wireless technology as a complement to wired and bus approaches on capital projects.

Smart Wireless is based on the WirelessHART standard which is designed for control and monitoring applications. Smart Wireless devices based on the WirelessHART standard deliver 99.9% reliability because of the self-organizing nature of the network.  This ensures that data is always delivered reliably and is never lost.  This level of reliability is a prerequisite to using wireless technology for any critical monitoring or control application.  Devices that conform to the WirelessHART specification can sense measurements at update rates up to once per second.  WirelessHART also allows exception reporting for network efficiency; devices only communicate a measurement value if it has changed significantly since the last communication or if the time since the last communication has exceeded a required reporting time, optimizing battery life.

New Siemens Gateway Makes it Easier to Connect Triconex Fail-Safe Controllers to a Simatic PCS

Siemens Industry Solutions has developed the Gateway CM104 TSAA − a new migration solution for integrating Triconex fail-safe controllers into Simatic PCS 7-based control systems.  The Gateway enables existing systems to be expanded or modernized inexpensively and step-by-step.

Fail-safe controllers are one of the fundamental requirements for achieving high system availability. They process and monitor critical closed-loop controls and applications to ensure that modern production plants fail safely.  Until now, these types of controllers have often been installed and operated separately from the process control system.  That meant that they were frequently overlooked when it came to modernization.

Siemens has now developed the Gateway CM104 TSAA to bring both the process control system and the safety engineering up to the state-of-the-art at the same time.  It facilitates continuous communication between the Triconex, Trident or Tricon fail-safe controller – depending on the application – and the Siemens automation system.  The Gateway is completely integrated into the PCS 7, and can be laid out as a single or fully redundant link between the systems.  It uses the Triconex TSAA protocol for this purpose. The Gateway is based on standard Industrial Ethernet components, and also contains diagnostic functions with alarms visualized in PCS 7.

The new Siemens Gateway is used in the modernization and migration to PCS 7 to form a link with existing Triconex fail-safe products.  It can also be used in projects requiring communication to PCS 7 controllers.  The engineering is carried out with the aid of a standard PCS 7 or STEP 7, thus enabling existing systems to be expanded or modernized inexpensively, step-by-step with Simatic.

Further extending the predictive intelligence of PlantWeb architecture, this new capability is embedded in DeltaV's digital control system with automatic configuration to provide increased performance and availability for all DeltaV and FOUNDATION fieldbus-based control loops. DeltaV InSight is uniquely automatic - it provides system-wide performance monitoring and diagnostics with no additional configuration or maintenance effort. InSight performance monitoring is automatically updated for any changes made to the system. DeltaV InSight also accounts for process changes by automatically learning process dynamics from normal day-to-day operations. This process knowledge may be applied to improve plant performance and availability with adaptive loop tuning, non-linear control, loop diagnostics, process simulation, and model based control.

DeltaV InSight has also been enhanced with automatic performance reports that can be scheduled to provide key performance metrics for a user's control system. Based on XML standards and Microsoft Excel templates, these reports are ready to use out of the box, or can be customized with a plant's unique key performance indicators. These reports will also be available through Emerson's highly successful Guardian Web Dashboard, enabling customers to easily distribute reports across their enterprise.
